8.0 SIWES Overview
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) takes place during the extended vacation following the completion of the second semester of the first year.
8.1 Guidelines on the SIWES Program
8.1.1 Responsibility for Placement
- Institutions offering ND programs arrange placement of students in the industry by the end of the second semester of the first year. Six copies of the placement list are submitted to the Executive Secretary, NBTE.
- The Placement Officer discusses and agrees with industry on:
- A task inventory of what students should learn or practice
- Industry-based and institution-based supervisors
- The student's evaluation — weighted more on the industry-based supervisor's evaluation
8.1.2 Evaluation of Students during SIWES
Considerations shall include:
- Punctuality
- Attendance
- General attitude to work
- Respect for authority
- Interest in the field/technical area
- Technical competence as a potential technician in the field
8.1.3 Grading of SIWES

8.1.5 The Institution-Based Supervisor
Signs the logbook during each visit to assess how well the objectives of the scheme are being achieved and to assist students experiencing difficulties.
8.1.6 Frequency of Visit
- First visit: within one month of placement
- Second visit: six weeks after the initial visit
- Final visit: during the last month of the attachment
8.1.7 Stipends
The rate of stipend is determined from time to time by the Federal Government after consultation with the Federal Ministry of Education, the Industrial Training Fund, and the NBTE.
8.2 SIWES as a Component of the Curriculum
Successful completion of SIWES plays a crucial role in the overall success of a student's program. A failure may suggest insufficient interest or lack of potential to develop into a skilled technician.
- SIWES is graded on a pass or fail basis.
- If a student fulfills all other program requirements but fails SIWES, they may be permitted to undertake an additional four months of SIWES at their own expense.
- Students found guilty of misconduct or absent during the program must repeat SIWES.
- Students who defer the first or second semester must complete SIWES at the end of the fourth semester (ND).
